These are the minimum qualification requirements that we expect staff to have if they want to work in an early years setting. The DfE consider that it would not be practical for an individual to maintain their registration if they no longer practice as a nurse. Staff who have registered for a qualification since 1 September that meets the full and relevant criteria must also have suitable level 2 literacy and numeracy qualifications to count towards the EYFS staff:child ratios at level 3.
During their training, early years apprentices can be included in the unqualified part of the staff to child ratios in an early years setting, if their employer is happy that they are competent and responsible. Because an apprenticeship at level 2 or 3 includes a full and relevant level 2 or 3 qualification — no matter when it was achieved — all those who have achieved an apprenticeship can be counted in the staff ratios at level 2 if they have achieved a level 2 apprenticeship or 3 if they have achieved a level 3 apprenticeship.
Those who have achieved a level 3 apprenticeship will need to have obtained suitable English and maths qualifications in order to count in the level 3 child:staff ratios. The Institute for Apprenticeships and Technical Education is working with groups of employers to develop and publish new apprenticeship standards for a range of sectors.
A level 3 early years educator standard has been developed and approved for delivery. The early years educator level 3 standard meets the early years educator EYE criteria. These requirements are set out in the EYFS framework. The Department for Education DfE has worked with organisations specialising in SEND to create a level 3 early years special educational needs co-ordinator SENCO qualification specification and job description for those working in non-maintained early years settings.

These tests are compulsory and it will not be possible to enter training without having successfully completed them.

You are able to book these tests in advance. The Department for Education DfE strongly advises you to take the tests soon after you have submitted an application. As of February new changes to these tests means that you can make unlimited attempts and the first three attempts are free of charge. The DfE has also removed the lock-out period that previously prevented you from re-taking tests for two years.
You do not need to have completed these tests prior to making an application or attending an interview however your offer will be subject to successful completion. Psychology students learn in our applied cognition and flexible creative method labs. I loved going in to the classroom and felt that every session was beneficial to my studies and for me to build my confidence. I found the course very interesting, especially in extending my knowledge on current research regarding child development and enhancing my practice and leadership skills.
During the course, I carried out a placement to gain experience with babies and to utilise leadership skills with other early years practitioners, which I found enjoyable. The highlights of this course were attending university sessions once or twice a month to exchange thoughts and ideas around practice and coursework.
